                                                                                               City Hall, Cherokee, Iowa
                                                                                              January 7, 2008 – 4:30 P.M.

A special meeting was called to order on this date by Mayor Henrich.  Present:  Councilperson Stieneke, Leach,
Peck, Mallory, Burkhart, City Attorney Miller, Clerk-Treasurer Taylor.

Dwight Varce, 605 W. Cedar, said that when a City Manager search committee was formed some time back the
committee members had specific suggestions they would like to see in the ordinance.  He passed out copies and
asked the council to seriously consider the suggestions.

Clarence Krepps, Kuehl & Payer, was present to review possible applicants for the City Manager position.  On a
motion by Councilperson Stieneke, seconded by Burkhart, the council went into closed session at 4:35 p.m. to
discuss applicants as per Iowa Code Chapter 21.5-1(i).  Roll call was:
AYES:  Stieneke, Leach, Peck, Burkhart, Mallory
NAYS:  None

A motion by Councilperson Leach, seconded by Stieneke, brought the council back into regular session at 6:23 p.m.
Roll call was:
AYES:  Leach, Peck, Mallory, Stieneke
NAYS:  Burkhart

On a motion by Councilperson Leach, seconded by Stieneke, the council authorized retaining Mr. Krepps to continue
the City Manager search with a targeted hiring date of July 1, as discussed in closed session.  Roll call was:
AYES:  Leach, Peck, Stieneke
NAYS:  Burkhart, Mallory

Mr. Krepps said he would bring back his cost to continue the search, as well as research salary ranges for cities
of comparable size.  He expects to start advertising in February.  In reviewing a proposed interview schedule from
Mr. Krepps where all candidates would be interviewed on the same day, Councilperson Burkhart suggested another
option where each candidate would be interviewed on separate days.  She feels this gives the council more time
with each candidate.  An interview schedule will be discussed further and finalized in the next few months.

A motion by Councilperson Leach, seconded by Stieneke, adjourned the meeting at 6:45 p.m.  Motion carried.

 Dennis Henrich – Mayor
