Job Opening

The City of Cherokee is accepting applications for a full-time Machine Truck Operator II in the Street Dept.  Applicant must have a valid Class B CDL and be able to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time.  The job description is found below.  Submit applications to City Hall, 416 W. MACHINE TRUCK OPERATOR II

A Machine Truck Operator II, under the direction of the Superintendent, or his designee, performs a variety of unskilled or semi-skilled maintenance work and operates a variety of equipment in the construction, operation, repair, maintenance and replacement of city street and storm drainage facilities and systems.

A Machine Truck Operator II works under the immediate supervision of the Street Superintendent, or his designee.  He is responsible for, but not limited to, the following duties:

  1.  Maintaining a variety of records relating to inspections, maintenance activity, street signage, etc.;

2.      Determining the location of sewer lines from the appropriate sources prior to excavation;

3.  Insuring the proper maintenance of equipment and tools by cleaning and checking equipment and tools after use;

  4.  Driving trucks of various sizes and weights in the loading, hauling, and unloading of various equipment, gravel, and sand;

  5.  Performing routine inspection and preventative maintenance on assigned equipment and referring defects or needed repairs
       to the supervisor.

  6.  Performing all duties in conformance to appropriate safety and security standards;

  7.  Performing required labor involved in construction and maintenance projects as part of a crew, including pavement cutting,
       ditch digging, manhole and catch basin cleaning, main and sewer pipe distribution repair, laying, backfilling, and other
       duties as directed by the Superintendent;

  8.  Cutting, fitting, laying, repairing, tapping, cleaning, and flushing storm drainage mains, gates and fittings, and repairing services;

  9.  Operating a variety of power construction and maintenance equipment used in street maintenance repair;

10.  Inspecting or repairing streets and drainage systems at frequent intervals to insure that all aspects of the system are
      functioning  properly;

11.  Assisting in shutting off broken sections of water mains as required to effectuate street or storm drainage system repair;

12.  Performing backup duties for related positions, as required;

13.  Serving on various employee or other committees, as assigned.

A Machine Truck Operator II must have skill in the operation of the tools and equipment used by the department.  A Machine Truck Operator II must have the ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time; have the ability to work safely; have the ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments, and the public; and have the ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions. 

A Machine Truck Operator II must have graduated from high school or have a GED equivalent.  A valid State drivers license and Class B CDL is required.
